Interview a Veteran: Assignment Guidelines
The purpose of this assignment is to provide the student with an opportunity to interview a veteran they have selected and to learn something new about that individual, as well as to learn about what it is like to serve in the military based on your peers’ interviews. Use the Veteran interview questions provided below to conduct the interview and the dedicated discussion forum
in Blackboard to post your interview and a reply to two peers in your clinical group. Review these instructions and the grading criteria for the assignment as outlined in the grading rubric before you begin to avoid unnecessary loss of points on the assignment. This assignment constitutes 5% of your grade for this course.
PART 1: Discussion Board on Blackboard
Identify a veteran who is willing to be interviewed. Arrange a meeting time in a place that ensures mutual comfort and confidentiality.
Conduct the interview using the following questions:
a. What were the factors that led you to join the military?
b. Tell me about your military experience.
c. When and where do you / did you serve?
d. What do you / did you do while in the service?
e. How has the military service affected you?
f. What was the most satisfying about your military experience?
g. What was the greatest challenge of your military experience?
h. If you were a volunteer, would you volunteer again?
In the initial discussion board posting, describe in no more than 800 words…
a. Information about the veteran without using the veterans name or initials. Refer to the individual as “veteran.” Include information such as gender, age, race, military branch, etc.
b. Describe the veteran’s responses to the interview questions in a narrative format that further describes the veteran.
c. Discuss at least 1 new piece of information that you elicited from this interview.
d. Discuss how the information you obtained for the interview will change the way you currently practice or interact with veterans.
PART 2: Discussion Board Replies on Blackboard
Read and provide a substantive response to the postings of at least two other students in your clinical group in a 1-3 paragraph reply post.
As a clinical group, prepare and present a 10-minute summary of the responses that best represent the group for an in-class discussion that will take place on 7.3.19. Demographics, statistics, and themes/outliers of your findings will be of interest.
