Paper details: Read the appropriate chapters in Examining American Histories, Document 4.4, and the primary sources in the “Awakening
Religious Tensions” Documents Project at the end of chapter 4. Write an essay answering the following question:
Some historians point to the Great Awakening as an important religious and social transformation that helped pave the way to the American
Revolution. Based on the Documents Project in Chapter 4, consider how the Great Awakening reflected the religious, social, and economic
tensions that were part of eighteenth-century colonial society.
What was the central debate between “Old Light” ministers and “New Light”
ministers? Why did “Old Light” ministers consider the revival movement threatening? Why did the Great Awakening appeal to American colonists,
particularly non-elites? In your opinion, did the legacies (ideas or practices) of the Great Awakening contribute to colonists’ decision to break with Great Britain? Why or why not? To prepare for the essay, examine the “Interpret the Evidence” questions on p. 127.
Be sure to read the introduction to the Documents Project and the individual introductions to the primary sources for context.
NOTE: Consult your Great Awakening primary source analysis
Be sure to analyze thoroughly the documents in the project. Consider the following questions: What specific question or problem does your document project address? How do the documents illustrate multiple perspectives?
Is there any common ground in the documents? Do the documents fit into and reveal a larger story of change over time? What is the historical significance of the event that your document project explores? Remember! You must use evidence from the documents to explain and support your argument.
