Describe a Food Allergy Experiment
Describe a Food Allergy Experiment. Participants were sat at individual rooms with a computer present in front of them. Participants were instructed during the Pre rating phase to rate food items presented on the screen on a scale from 0 – 8. Zero represented least likely to cause a food allergy while eight represented highly likely to cause a food allergy to the hypothetical being, Mr.X. Participants were then presented with the Stage I training. Participants were instructed to press the “y” key if they believed the food displayed on the screen caused an allergic reaction to Mr.X. Participants were instructed to press the “n” key if they believed the food displayed the food displayed on the screen did not cause an allergic reaction. The program then displayed “allergic reaction” in red letters if the food caused an allergic reaction. The program displayed “no allergic reaction” in black letters if the food did not cause an allergic reaction. The individual food items presented were a pear, chicken, ham, and ice cream. There was a total of 24 trials with each item displayed 6 times in a randomized order. The Pear (A) and the Chicken (A’) caused an allergic reaction. The Ham (B) and Ice Cream (B’) did not cause an allergic reaction. Participants were then presented with the Stage II training. Participants were instructed to press the “y” key if they believed the food displayed on the screen caused an allergic reaction to Mr.X. Participants were instructed to press the “n” key if they believed the food displayed the food displayed on the screen did not cause an allergic reaction. Participants were presented with the food that consisted of one previously presented food item and a newly presented food item. Participants were also presented with a single food item. The program then displayed “allergic reaction” in red letters if the food caused an allergic reaction. The program displayed “no allergic reaction” in black letters if the food did not cause an allergic reaction. The new food items prepare with the stimulus A presented were pot pie (X) and tomato (X’). The new food items presented with Stimulus B were steak (Y) and mushrooms (Y’). The combination meals AX and BY resulted in an allergic reaction. New food items called Fillers( CW, EU, DZ, FV), were paired together and resulted in no allergic reaction. There were a total of 72 trials with a total of 12 pairs of food. AX, A’X’, BY, B’Y’, A, A’, B, B’, CW, EU, DZ, FV were presented six times each. The participants were then presented with the Post Training Phase. Participants asked to rate food items presented on the screen on a scale from 0 – 8. Zero represented least likely to cause a food allergy while eight represented highly likely to cause a food allergy to the hypothetical being, Mr.X. All food items presented were presented individually.
