Objectives of the midterm case:
1. To be able to Identify, Evaluate and Recommend proper strategic recommendations with action plans: the case of Careem
2. Identify the competitive challenges organizations face.
3. Apply managerial judgment skills in the assessing business risk.
4. Design results-oriented action plans.
5. Integrate knowledge gained from previous business courses.
6. Use research capabilities necessary for managerial analysis and decision making.
7. Apply the tools, techniques, and models of strategic management to actual business situations through the use of case analysis.
Process:
1- Work in groups of 5 to 6 students (5 groups total)
2- Research Careem and Ride-share business models (use all available literature; company website, literature online)
3- Careem’s point of contact meeting the students to give background about the company and address students’ questions. Share data that could help in the process.
4- Go through the three steps of analyzing a case study:
a. Identification: sharp diagnosis of strategic issues and key problems. (use the internal and external evaluation tools studied in the course)
b. Analysis and evaluation: check the company’s financial ratios, its profit margins, and its capital structure, and decide how strong the firm is financially. Look at marketing, managerial competence and other factors underlying the company’s success. Look at the resources and competencies and if the company is capitalizing on them. Decide whether and why the firm’s competitive position is getting stronger or weaker.
c. Recommendations: set recommendations and plan of actions. The set of recommendations should address all the problems or issues you have identified in the two steps before. Avoid recommending anything you would not yourself be willing to do if you were in management’s shoes.
5- Prepare a written report (5 total)
