This week looks at one of the most important questions in political science: why is it so hard to promote democratic consolidation? In order to better understand how democratic consolidation works, and what prevents it, we will discuss the following questions:
1. Are there any “preconditions” that must exist for democracy to work and if so what are they?
2. What explains why democracy has become more consolidated in some parts of the world rather than others?
3. Who is most effective at promoting democratic consolidation – domestic groups such as civil society and opposition parties, or international forces such as foreign donors?
#The learning diary is based on two levels of reflection as follows: 1. Objective level: what did you learn from session X? And what do you feel about what you have learned? 2. Interpretive level: what is the relevance, if any, of session X to your existing knowledge, experience, context or attitudes? How might you apply what you learned from session X? What would you do differently?
