Directions:
1. Provide the title and a link to the article you’ve chosen at the top of the page.
2. Summarize the article in a few sentences. The best example would be a news article about a current event. It could also be an article about some new historical finding—such as a lost document or an archeological dig.
3. For the majority of the assignment, explain how what you’ve learned in class or in the textbook helped you to better understand the article. How are the events described in the story related to a topic we’ve studied in class? How might an understanding of history change the outcome of the events described in the story?
I must admit, part of the point of the assignment is to get you to engage with the news if you’re not doing so already, so the most organic way to do this is just check the news every day and keep your eyes peeled and ears tuned. As backup, here are a few suggestions for news sources, most of which have reporters out in the field. You do not have to use one from this list. If you have any doubts about your news source, run it past me. If you use a news source other than the (Continued next page) one on this list, evaluate it using the resource “How to Fact Check Fake New Sites” and check your news source against the database. Both of these resources are linked in the History in the News folder in the Resources area of our course menu. Local newspapers, of course: The Ottumwa Courier, Oskaloosa Herald, Fairfield Ledger, Daily Iowegian, Bloomfield Democrat, Albia News, etc.
Citing your Sources
Besides the news article, you should really only use your online course materials and textbook. The point of the assignment is to demonstrate that you can apply what you’re learning in class to the news articles. Cite all your sources. MLA or APA is fine. Google “Purdue OWL citation” for
an explanation of citation styles. Include a Works Cited section at the end of this assignment that contains full reference information for all sources used, which should consist of your textbook and article. Do NOT use Wikipedia.
