In Melnyk and Finout-Overholt’s (2019) textbook, there are fifteen Ethical Principles of the Universal Declaration on Bioethics and Human Rights essential for evidence implementation. One of the principles I chose to further discuss is the topic on informed consent. Informed consent is based upon the ethical principle of autonomy (Melnyk & Fineout-Overholt, 2019). It is the ethical principle known as respect for persons. This principle provides individuals with the right to make free, unpressured, and informed decisions. The informed consent process is one of the main components of the ethical conduct of research with human subjects.
Informed consent is the process of discussing potential research participants about the important elements of a research study and what their participation will involve. An informed consent document is a means of a written, signed and dated form typically used to provide subjects with the information they need to make a decision to participate for a research study. Research professionals that include research nurses, who seek informed consents, are expected to communicate information in a clear and unambiguous way (Nusbaum et al., 2017). Communicating a highly complex clinical trial or research study to participants with limited literacy, diverse background and reduced autonomy is a challenging task for clinical researchers. It is therefore imperative to investigate and adopt new communication strategies to enhance understanding of research information among participants. Most importantly, a statement must be made by researchers, offering participants the chance to depart at any time from the research without any consequences.
