Write a Museum Ethnography paper
The aim of the Museum Ethnography paper is to help you understand how people engage with artifacts and museums. In order to produce this paper, you will go to a museum of your choice and spend some time there (a few hours) looking at the type of art/artifacts displayed, what the architecture and location of the museum communicates, how people are moving through the space, how they engage with it and the things on display, and so on. You are to take careful notes about your own experience as well, understanding that you are a participant-observer in the process.
You shall then use your own personal insights, as well as the behaviors of others around you, to construct a neutral analysis and thesis as your paper. Take into consideration the type of museum and how that affects the way in which people are behaving in and with space. For example, is it an entertainment museum, an art museum, a landmark that has been preserved, etc. Your goal is to be a critical observer of how people are behaving in the space, and feel free to do research on social media while you are there to see how people are sharing and depicting their experiences–and also note how you are using it while you are there. To summarize: In this paper, you are to
(a)go to a museum, (b) take diligent notes about your experiences, the ways in which visitors are engaging with the art, architecture, social media, and space of the museum, and (c)unpack how these issues(laid out in your thesis statement)demonstrate the socio-cultural function and operation of the museum. Grades for this assignment will be based on:
(1)the originality and creativity of your essay’s argument and museum selection, as well as the clarity of your thesis; (2) the quality of your observations, note-taking, and analysis of your museum experience; and(3) the style, syntax, and grammar of the essay.
The target length of the assignment is approximately 800-1,000 words; roughly 2-3 pages, double-spaced, Times New Roman, 12 pt. font.
