#1 According to the Office of Disease Prevention and Health Promotion 2020, “disparities is often interpreted to mean racial or ethnic disparities, many dimensions of disparity exist in the United States, particularly in health. If a health outcome is seen to a greater or lesser extent between populations, there is disparity.” A major health disparity is the relationship directly related with the poverty or lack of income a family may have. According to Health People 2020, Social Determinants of Health topic area is organized into 5 place-based domains:
Economic Stability
Education
Health and Health Care
Neighborhood and Built Environment
Social and Community Context
Poverty is a key issue in the Economic Stability domain.
Although the U.S. Census Bureau uses “a set of dollar value thresholds that vary by family size and composition to determine who is in poverty,”2 poverty may be defined in a number of different ways, particularly by socioeconomic status (SES). In spite of the differences in definition between poverty and socioeconomic status, researchers agree that there is a clear and established relationship between poverty, socioeconomic status, and health outcomes4, 5 including increased risk for disease and premature death. For this direct correlation, unfortunately the less money or income you have or make, the less care you can and will probable receive in addition or lack of ability to receive care. This is such a huge problem especially now that COVID-19 occurred and many people have lost jobs and health insurance and now cannot receive medical attention that they need.
#2 It was asked of this writer to write a post based on identifying a health disparity and then to research the topic, while including how is it being addressed at both the local and national level. This writer decided on way to improve mental health through prevention and by ensuring access to appropriate, quality mental health services. While working in the Emergency Department this writer has seen how mental health has become a huge medical issue facing what at one-point thought to be only the elderly but is now realizing it affects everyone at any age. In any given year, an estimated 18.1% (43.6 million) of U.S. adults ages eighteen years or older suffered from any mental illness and 4.2% (9.8 million) suffered from a seriously debilitating mental illness (Behavioral Trends 2015).
The Emergency Departments are being filled with patients who either have thoughts to hurt themselves or have already tried to hurt themselves. There seems to not be enough resources for patients to go to in order to get the help they need. But, as the Federal Government begins to implement the health reform legislation, it will give attention to providing services for individuals with mental illness and substance use disorders, including new opportunities for access to and coverage for treatment and prevention services. Researchers now know that the prevention of mental, emotional, and behavioral disorders is inherently interdisciplinary and draws on a variety of different strategies.
Locally there has been more education offered to kids within the school system. Early education on the reasons why drugs and vaping are bad but especially bad at this age for brain development. Seems to help decrease number of teenagers using in 2020. Along with raising the age limits from eighteen to twenty-one who are allowed to purchase tobacco products. With these changes and more that are coming hopefully we can help our friends and family who are dealing with mental health issues through each struggle they face.
