Write an essay in which they explore a chosen media three single most important elements of the rhetorical situation
Using MLA formatting, students will write a 700 – 1400 word essay in which they explore a chosen media’s three single most important elements of the rhetorical situation (subject, writer, purpose, intended audience, context).
Special notes concerning the essay:
1. If you are analyzing a song, remember that you are analyzing the LYRICS and not the music video. If you need to reference the music video in order to provide context, that is fine; however, you need to also provide a separate citation for the music video.
Do not analyze the song in terms of the music video for any other element of the rhetorical situation beyond context.
2. Please return to the Module One Content page and review the 1101 Vocabulary Handout in order to understand the difference between Context and Subject.
3. When discussing the element of Writer or Speaker in your essay, do not talk about point of view in terms of pronouns (1st person, 2nd person, 3rd person). This does little in terms of true analysis. Instead, when discussing the writer’s point of view, talk about the writer’s argument – their stance or their opinion.
The speaker of a poem is not the writer of the poem. The speaker is the voice of the person addressing the intended audience.
The speaker in the song is not the writer of the song. The speaker is the voice of the person delivering the lyrics.
If you want to talk about the actual writer or the musical artist, that is fine; however, you must be certain to provide a separate citation for the biographical information about the writer.
4. Any information NOT FOUND in the song’s lyrics, blog post, poem or other text requires its own citation.
5. I am aware of the song “analyses” written by fans found below the lyrics on sites such as genius lyrics. Plagiarism comes at a steep cost in my class. Please do your own work.
