For up to 25 extra points, please post a response to Dr. B.′s questions below in standard, grammatically correct sentences. (i.e., no ″textese″) Then, respond to a post from one of your classmates with which you disagree. (Remember to disagree with each other respectfully.) You will not be able to see your classmates′ responses until you respond to Dr. B′s questions. Your first post should be at least 150 words long and is worth 20 points; your response to a classmate is worth 5 points. Postings will be graded based on the quality of your argument and support with specific examples from the text. (Paraphrase your examples in your own words. No direct quotations.) Keep in mind that your postings should convince me that you read and understood the readings in their entirety. Be sure to address ALL aspects of the prompt in your VERY FIRST post. No citations are necessary. Here is your prompt: a) After reading ″The Blessings of Slavery″ by George Fitzhugh, and the indicated excerpt from ″Harriet Jacobs: Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl″ (links are provided in the Course Schedule), which of Fitzhugh′s justifications for slavery would Jacobs be most likely to dispute? Why? b) Today, some are advocating that the U.S. government pay reparations to African Americans, arguing that our history of slavery and racial prejudice is the cause of perhaps half of the pay discrepancy between blacks and whites. Estimates are that this would cost around $500 billion. Another argument is the precedent Congress established in 1988, when it authorized reparations to Japanese-Americans who were confined in internment camps during much of World War II. Knowing what you now know about slavery, do you think reparations should be paid to African Americans? Why/why not?
