1.Traditional theories of childhood have tended to focus on how children are socialized into the broader society. Using at least two of the following readings, explain the weaknesses of traditional theories of childhood development. Then, discuss how at least two of the readings challenge the popular notion that children simply internalize adult values.

2. Sociologists have sought to understand the role that children play in actively constructing meanings of race and gender. Using the articles (see attached) written by Barrie Thorne (“Constructing Opposite Side) as well as Debra Van Asudale and Joe Feagin (“Using Racial and Ethnic Concepts), discuss the ways children create gender and racial boundaries in their interactions with peers. Then, discuss the consequences of creating such boundaries.
No more than 5 pages, double-spaced (2.0), 12-point font and include page numbers.
You do not need to have a citation page, but be sure to refer to the author(s) or the title of the readings.

To begin writing your answers, first reiterate the questions. After reintroducing the argument, you can then develop your answers by using readings as “examples” to support it.
Avoid using a statement that is grounded solely in your personal opinion.
Instead, your answers should come from the readings.
Each answer should use no less than 2 readings.
Be sure to capture the main argument and key concepts of each reading that you use.
If authors coined the important concepts/terms to make their argument, it is important for you to name these concepts and elaborate them in your answers.
Use QUOTES from the readings sparingly.
If you can, try not to use direct quotes. If you must use direct quotes to illustrate your points, make sure to paraphrase it in the next sentence.
