You will construct an argument that responds to the following question: What is the purpose of a college education?
Use ideas from our class texts and your own experience and logic to construct an argument around the question above. Use at least 2 (or more) of the texts listed above to help make your case. Be sure your essay is informed by your opinion, voice, and understanding and analysis of the texts. Please do not do additional research for this essay; the 5 essays from Current Issues and the video are plenty to deal with for this short essay assignment.
Things to Shoot for:
- Show that you have carefully read the essays and that you have fully digested and considered the various viewpoints and evidence.
- Show you are really thinking about the topic — these are complex ideas, so don’t settle for easy answers.
- Write so that someone not in our class could understand it. Assume your audience has not read or seen these texts. That means you’ll need to briefly summarize key ideas/information and explain any unfamiliar terms.
- Support your analysis, evaluations and proposal with relevant ideas, information, and quotes from the texts. It is up to you to decide which points from the assigned readings to use. Use them effectively; analyze why the quote is important and how it affects your argument.
- Integrate sources skillfully. Introduce your sources with signal phrases. Decide to paraphrase, summarize, or quote. Use the proper in-text citation, and use your critical voice after to explain how the source material connects to your point.
