GLOBAL CITIZEN PROJECT
The assignment is designed to address two selected learning objectives, GDP and Economic Growth, in two different questions.
QUESTION 1. PART a.
Students will demonstrate their ability to compare and contrast how global issues and systems are experienced at different scales by investigating the composition of gross domestic product (GDP) and the impact of trade on GDP. Given data for
specific elements of GDP for several countries, students will calculate the values for the investment and net export expenditure categories in GDP as well as total GDP.
Then they will answer questions about the data in the table focusing on the meaning of the value of net exports to countries.
QUESTION 1 PART b.
While the numerical impact of positive or negative net exports on GDP is straightforward, the decisions about trade – what and how much to export and/or imports – are not. Students will use what they have learned about how those
decisions are made to come to their own conclusions about how they might advise countries about trade.
QUESTION 2 PART a.
Students will demonstrate their ability to identify and describe major global issues namely, the connection between economic growth and standards of living in different countries. Given information about GDP per capita and economic growth rates for a couple of countries, students will consider the theoretical impact of this information on standards of living. With additional data for the countries that provides evidence of standards of living, students will discuss whether differences in factors such as health and educational systems, rates of saving and investment, civil disturbances, and enforcement of the rule of law have led to differing rates of economic growth.
