Calculate and analyze a Balance Sheet
The assignment this week is to calculate and analyze a Balance Sheet. The assignment has two parts. Both parts involve using Balance Sheet from Apple. See attachment. Apple+Financial.pdf
Part one:
Using the Apple Balance Sheet, perform the following calculations. I suggest you create a table or spreadsheet for your answers. I want to see the formulas you used to make your calculations as well as the results. 1. Percentage change in total assets, liabilities and equity for 2012 to 2013. For clarity, this means you will do three calculations, one for each major component of the balance sheet.
Part two:
Based on your results, answer the following two questions. What trends do you seed by looking at the Balance Sheet itself, the raw numbers? What are they telling you? Look at your percentages, what are they telling you? My expectation is the paper will contain the following: Calculations. Show formulas and results. Grading will be based using the correct formula and correct results. Analysis. Restate the questions and your responses. Remember I am looking for at least three references. As for volume, think about a two paragraphs per answer. Remember to sight your sources if you use them in your write up. Your submission should be in MS Word. If you are using a spreadsheet, embed it in the document.
Part 3:
(two paragraph with references is enough for this part and this part is not related to above mentioned two parts) Many many organizations state that ″people are our most important assets″. However, Human Capital, unlike other assets is not accounted for in any financial statement or is it? The question this week is to discuss the idea of human capital (employees) being assets. Are they truly ″assets″ according to GAAP or is there another way we should account for our employees? For reference, the article titled: ″On the use of the Economic Concepts of Human Capital in Financial Statements″. Please note: There are other articles and references that you can use, so please do not limit yourself.
