I know that I am not best driver. Many mistakes that I notice myself doing as small, but
could save a life if I simply take the time to remember prior to acting. In teaching students how
to be safe, confident drivers, I hope to also instill these techniques in myself.
Recently, I have moved. I went from living on a quiet cul-de-sac to living on a relatively
busy residential street. In the short amount of time that I have lived at my new residence I
noticed that I tend to back out of my driveway without looking down the road for oncoming cars.
Now I certainly look for pedestrians, bicyclists, and for cars that are close. However, on this new
street, close to a corner, I have realized that I need to look further down the street for oncoming
traffic. It took me some time to adapt to this busier street with more cars and faster drivers. I was able to recognize this area of weakness within myself. I would hope to teach my students this skill prior to them getting on the road. I would try to express the need for adapting to your
surroundings to my students.
Along these same lines, I would teach my students not to rely on other drivers. In my circumstance, I may have relied on the fact that other drivers would see me back out of my
driveway and stop. What I should do is to not trust in those drivers, but to trust in my ability and wait until it was completely clear. You cannot hope that people will react the way you want them to. You are only able to be responsible for your own actions. This is one driving tactic that I
would incorporate in my lessons time and time again.
