Video Transcript
In Week 4, you will create a personal resume. This is an exciting week, because preparing your resume is the first step in practicing and honing your written skills for your dream job. In fact, along your educational journey, be sure to update the resume you create this week each time you take on new responsibilities at work, complete volunteer hours, or gain a new skill.
Before you leave Ashford to embark on your career, we encourage you to connect with Ashford’s Career Services team to receive a formal resume review. Then you can head out into the workforce with confidence.
This week, you will review job boards and reflect on careers you’re interested in. Be sure to check into job boards like indeed.com and glassdoor.com. And don’t forget about government and nonprofit sites as well, like usajobs.gov and idealist.org. We are in a digital world, and professional networking through social media is a great way to earn credibility, network, and find careers. LinkedIn is another valuable online resource for you to locate career opportunities.
Knowing your strengths and limitations and becoming self-aware is an essential part of finding, landing, and loving your future career. That being said, you need to know which hard skills and soft skills really make you shine. Hard skills are teachable abilities like knowing a foreign language, for example. And soft skills are your interpersonal abilities, like the ability to communicate or listen well.
Knowing which hard and soft skills you possess isn’t all you need to know to land a career of your dreams. It’s important to be aware of your personality style as well. When you know your personality strengths, you accomplish two things. One, you can better direct yourself into a career field suited for your personality. And two, you will be more knowledgeable in matching the duties and responsibilities of careers to your personality. When a career fits you, you love it even more.
Sharing limitations can be tough, but it’s an important time to be honest. Rely on the confidence in your strengths to discuss how they help you overcome limitations. We all experience areas of challenge. Employers just want to know how we are combating them. With these tips, you now will have an answer to that very intimidating question.
