1. Imagine a world where sex and gender were not a major organizing principle of society. When we found out a couple was having a baby, instead of asking “what is it?” or “is it a boy or a girl?” what might we ask instead?

Instead of boy/girl or women’s/men’s, how would clothing/department stores be organized? How would restrooms be restructured? Who would we picture when we heard the word “surgeon”? What specific personal troubles might be alleviated for people in this new/imagined society?

2. Think of something specific that you (or someone else in your culture now) might think of as being “just different” between men and women, especially as it relates to their bodies and physical appearance. Then challenge yourself to reimagine a society restructured so that those differences would not be as evident to you as they are now.

What is it about your society right now that emphasizes/exaggerates those differences, and why? What benefits and drawbacks might currently be tied to this practice?
