This assignment requires students to discuss the cultural, social, political and/or legal factors affecting the prevalence of a culture of violence in a
particular context and how this may or may not have changed over time. Students may choose to consider a culture of violence in a broad or narrow
sociocultural or geographical context such as in families or a particular country, and to reflect on direct, structural and/or cultural violence and the
interactions between them. For example, students could choose to focus on American gun culture, domestic violence against women, or Western culture of violence against the non-human environment.
Criteria for assessment:
1. evidence of reading and reflection on the nature and context of the particular culture of violence chosen for analysis;
2. application of theories and concepts to explain the prevalence of a culture of violence in a particular context and how this might have changed over
time;
3. ability to express ideas clearly and intelligently, informed by readings, class discussions and/or personal experience;
4. ability to develop and present a coherently structured short essay within the required word limit (essays exceeding the word limit will be penalised);
and
5. inclusion of thorough referencing and a short bibliography of sources consulted.
