Discussion on The Land by Mildred D Taylor
Using ‘The Land’ by Mildred D. Taylor
Step 1: Pick three characters from that piece of literature (The Land). For each character, write 350-500 words providing a deep dive into the character. You are not describing the character. You want to discuss things like whether the character is static or dynamic, what kind of character arc the character experiences, and why it’s important, or whether it’s important that a character doesn’t have an arc. Is the character a modern or classic tragic hero or neither? Does the character have a specific function in the story that is interesting? These discussions of the characters should be thoughtful and specific. 30 points for each character analysis.
Step 2: Pick two literary elements that stand out in that piece of literature. (If you plan on writing about the context instead, skip this step.) Literary elements are things like imagery, symbolism, structure, figurative language, setting/atmosphere, tone, persona/point of view, etc. Again, you will write 350-500 words on each of the two literary elements and how they function in the story. Again, this should be thoughtful writing. 30 points for each literary element discussion.
Step 3: (Only if you are not doing step 2) Write 800-1000 words discussing the context of the piece of literature you chose to write your character analyses on. By context, I mean, what was going on when and where the piece of literature was written? Or, what was going on with the author or in the author’s life at the time the piece was written? What may have inspired the piece of literature? Things like that. 60 points.
This doesn’t need to be written in an essay format, but it does need to be thoughtful. When all is said and done, you will have written 1750-2500 words, and the total points for this assignment will be 150.
