Discussion on vulnerable groups according to CDC
Vulnerable populations are groups of individuals that are at higher risk for illness or health concerns or have less access to resources than the rest of the population. Vulnerable populations are sometimes referred to as disadvantaged groups. Examples may include minority groups, those living in poverty, individuals living in high crime areas, and people who lack access to health care, receive poorer quality education, or experience homelessness, mental illness, or unemployment, among many others. Human service professionals are frequently in contact with vulnerable populations in some capacity. For this discussion, you will visit the CDC National Environmental Public Health Tracking Network to identify vulnerable groups in your state.
To do this, please follow the steps below:
1. Please select the CDC link above. Once the site opens, a CDC Query Panel will appear on the page.
2. In the “Step 1: Content” section, select “Populations and Vulnerabilities” for the content area in the first dropdown. For the next two dropdowns, you may select any indicator and measure that you would like to view.
3. In the “Step 2: Geography Type” section, select the state option that populates the state listing in the “Step 3: Geography” section, rather than showing “All”. You may have to select different options for the last two dropdowns in Step 1.
4. In the “Step 3: Geography” section, select your state.
5. In the “Step 4: Time” section, select the most recent year (or group of years) shown.
6. You may select options in “Step 5: Advanced Options” if you prefer, but this is not required.
7. Click the green Go button to obtain your results.
8. You can then navigate your results to explore more detail.
