Section
In this section (1-3 paragraphs), include the following:
• Engage the reader about the topic/issue/problem
• Identify the problem: What is the problem? What causes the problem? Who does this problem affect?
• Address what solutions have been tried in the past and why they haven’t succeeded.
• Show your readers what will happen if this problem isn’t solved.
• Place your proposal thesis as the last sentence of the intro section. Note about your thesis statement: Give both your proposal and reasons. Play with this model: X should (or should not) do Y about Z because _____. Or: X should (or should not) be done about Y because _____. Examples: Politicians should institute a compulsory gun buyback program similar to Australia’s because their program has led to less gun violence. The minimum wage should (or should not) be raised to $15 an hour because ______. Body Section
• Present your solution. Explain how it will work. Discuss other possible solutions and argue that yours is better. You may set out other solutions first and argue how they won’t work.
• Make the goals of your solution clear. Many solutions cannot solve problems completely.
• Describe in detail the steps in implementing your solution and how they will solve the problem you have identified.
• Explain the positive consequences that will follow from your proposal. What good things will happen, or what bad things will be avoided if your proposal is followed?
A body paragraph should look like this:

• Further discussion and development
• Transition to the next point Conclusion Section
• Issue a call to action—if your readers agree with you, they will want to take action.
• Restate and emphasize exactly what readers need to do to solve the problem.
