Identify a visitor use management challenge
Identify a visitor use management challenge (aim for about 100-150 words here).
Over the last three weeks (from Recreation Ecology: Impact and Management to Federal Land Agency perspectives using MBO frameworks and planning), we have learned about critical frameworks and approaches for managing visitor use. The purpose of this exam is to have you tie the concepts from the last few weeks (listed above) together and apply them to a hypothetical visitor use challenge. Here’s what you need to do to complete this:
Identify a visitor use management challenge (aim for about 100-150 words here). You will be required to identify either a real or hypothetical (i.e., one you make up) visitor use management challenge. The issue can be related to either social (e.g., noise, conflict, crowding, etc.), ecological (e.g., soil erosion, water quality, vegetation, wildlife, etc.), or managerial resources (e.g., bathrooms, trails, transportation, etc.). As an example, the reading from Pilcher et al. examines sounds as a visitor use management challenge in Muir Wood National Monument.
You CANNOT use sounds as your example issue, since this example was our case study in class.
Apply the generalized Management-By-Objectives framework to your issue. Visit the 5-step MBO framework and apply it to your issue. Do the following to complete this:
Provide a description of the management objectives/desired conditions (aim for about 100-150 words here).
Identify indicators related to visitor experience for your management challenge. You should justify why the indicators are good indicators to use (aim for about 250 words here).
Develop a hypothetical norm curve for identifying thresholds. Your norm curve should be labeled appropriately and incorporate normative concepts like range of tolerable conditions, crystallization, etc. You should identify and describe the exact threshold level. You must produce a figure for this as it is impossible to just type this. I suggest using powerpoint or drawing it by hand.
Describe what you would monitor and the hypothetical/expected results (i.e. make up some results that seem realistic) from your monitoring. Relate these results back to your norm curve and the generalized MBO framework. Cleary describe your next steps in the MBO process and justify why these are the correct steps (aim for about 500 words here).
Relate your visitor use management challenge to an additional concept from our recent modules (aim for about 500-700 words for this section). Please choose ONE concept from the following:
Relate your visitor use issue to recreation ecology
Relate your visitor use issue to ecosystem services
Relate your visitor use issue to coping mechanisms
