Imagine you are being recruited by your classmate for their Senior Mental Acuity program, discuss how prepared or unprepared you would be. You know you will be working with people from various cultures and want to make sure you are prepared. Based on your classmates’ response to how you would be trained on culturally sensitivities, discuss how prepared or unprepared you would be. Make one more suggestion to improve your cultural competence in working with theses senior citizens. Respond to at least two classmates.

There is sometimes a very important aspect of a health education program, and that is volunteer recruitment. Recruiting people to volunteer their time to the cause can help in relieving the program financially. Not to mention that volunteers can often come from within the community, creating a more solid foundation for implementing health strategies to residents. Volunteers also tend to bring new capabilities to the program and offer different insights.
Developing a volunteer program can be done by reaching out to members of the community, as previously mentioned, as well as developing a training aspect to help ensure that volunteers are well educated on the matters at hand. This also helps in making surethat volunteers can be productive in helping staff and the community. Steps to development include involving the staff and establishing leaders of the program (University of Kansas, 2012). Also, ensuring that a volunteer manager or director is put in place to oversee and bring on more volunteers. Additionally, it is essential to have an orientation for volunteers when they begin and ongoing training for them as well.
Effective strategies for volunteer recruitment include targeting a population that has a similar interest in what the health program is trying to achieve. Also, reaching out to people through radio, newspaper listings, at fundraisers or fairs, and even through current volunteers and encouraging them to reach out to friends or family who might also want to volunteer (University of Kansas, 2012, Section 2).
Part II:
My volunteer recruitment plan for a Senior Mental Acuity program in which the volunteers would visit seniors in skilled nursing facilities is the following:
My target population would be people who have a passion for assisting seniors and enjoy participating in group activities. Volunteers can be recruited through community outreach, recreation centers, libraries, or student organizations. These can be done by posting flyers on notice boards, participating in booth events, or reaching out to instructors about speaking to their students. Volunteers would be trained to understand the environment in which the seniors live, and they will be trained on how to respect the beliefs and needs of the patients (Dr. Leon, n.d., p.1). Volunteers will also be trained to communicate effectively with all personnel at the facility.
