One term paper on a topic about any aspect of civil society
One 2,500-word term paper (from 2,250 to 2,750 words) on a topic of your choice, as long as your topic is about any aspect of civil society, and as long as you refer to at least one of the class readings. Paper length outside the above range is disadvantageous in terms of grading. The front page and bibliography are not included in word number. Plagiarism will be dealt with most harshly.
You should make an argument in your paper. An argument is an attempt to convince someone of something. To make an argument, you state your claim, provide supporting evidence for your claim, explain how your evidence supports your claim, and give reasons for accepting your conclusion. Do not end up with a description or a summary, that is, do not end up in describing situations or summarizing some authors’ arguments. About how to write a paper, this book “The
Craft of Research” by Wayne Booth (3rd edition. The University of Chicago Press) will be helpful. Available at IUJ library and online. Please search with something like “craft of research, pdf”
Your paper will be evaluated in terms of accuracy, clarity, and logic. It does not matter whether you have a view different from mine. Accuracy: whether you correctly understand the arguments, concepts, etc. discussed in class. Clarity: whether you present your argument in a clear and lucid way. Logic: whether your claim, evidence, and conclusion are connected in your argument.
