When Patrick Henry delivered his famous 1775 speech to the Virginia House of Burgesses
a touch choice to make: either to employ diplomatic measures to make peace with Great Britain or to fight the British in order to become an
independent nation. While we now know how it all turned out, keep in mind that the idea of breaking free from the mother country was not
something that anyone took lightly. Think of it in terms of the people of Texas having to decide whether or not to declare independence from
the United States and become an independent country. The American Colonists considered themselves to be Britons in the same way that
most Texans regard themselves as Americans. Just before young Patrick Henry was recognized to speak, he was preceded by two very
well-respected gentlemen who both advocated making amends with Great Britain. His thesis: “We must fight!”1. With that in mind, after having read the speech, provide a quote that exemplifies each of the three rhetorical strategies—logos, pathos, and ethos—that Henry employs in his speech. For each quote, provide an example of a rhetorical device in use. What does Henry hope
to achieve with the quote?
Hopefully, after having read Carlson’s essay, you have taken NONE of it literally. Bigfoot did NOT steal the narrator’s wife, nor does he
actually believe that Bigfoot stole her. This is an easy narrative to read; however, it can be a tough one to analyze, so take time to
THINK. Carlson makes a very strong argument with “Bigfoot Stole my Wife”; however, he never mentions that argument anywhere in the text
after the first line. He does, nonetheless, provide the reader with clues to help him/her infer what really happened. His thesis is the
very first line: “The problem is credibility.” While creating your initial post, keep in mind the narrator’s credibility, or lack thereof.
I’ll admit that this is a tough one!
2. In your initial post, provide a quote that exemplifies each of the three rhetorical strategies—logos, pathos, and ethos—that Carlson
employs in his narrative. For each quote, provide an example of a rhetorical device in use. What does Carlson hope to achieve with the quote?
