Reading Report: The reading report assignment will be based on Patrick Miller’s article, “The Omniscience of God and Human Freedom.”
You should expect to read this article several times before you begin writing your report.
Your first reading should be fairly quick. Notice the title of the article. What does the title tell you about the subject that the author discusses?
As you read the article, keep asking yourself, “What is the main point that the author wishes to make? What is he trying to convince me about? If you do this, you should be able to identify Miller’s primary thesis or claim that he makes in the article. Then move on to list the various stages in his argument. What evidence does he produce to support his thesis?
Once you have read the article “The Omniscience of God and Human Freedom.” multiple times, you may be ready to begin outlining your paper.
In your paper you should do the following:
1. identify the primary thesis that Miller is arguing. What is is main point?
2. outline the evidence that he produces to support his thesis. There will be multiple claims that he makes to support his thesis.
3. ask yourself, “What do I think about his thesis and argument? Has he made a strong argument? Has he convinced me that he is correct? Why or why not?”
4. when you write your paper, make sure to pay careful attention to spelling and grammar. This will affect your grade.
In the summary, students should include a statement regarding the thesis of the author, the elements of the argument and the evidence that is used to support the thesis of the author. Students must also provide a brief evaluation of the reading. Has the author successfully presented a coherent and well-supported argument (regardless of whether you agree or disagree with his/her conclusions)?
