Study racism in sport and analyze issues of social justice
Important learning outcomes of this course are to better understand and study racism in sport and to analyze issues of social justice. The goal of the reflection paper is to critically examine the readings related to the weekly topics you are assigned. The reflection papers will be due at the end of the week the topic is covered (see course calendar). The two assigned topics/weeks will be posted in the in the Reflection Paper Materials folder on Blackboard during the second week of class, after the initial add/drop period.
The Reflection Paper should include:
- An overview of the paper’s direction
a. Identify a major theme/topic that stood out from the assigned materials.
b. Introduce and define primary concept(s) from both the Racism and Social Justice Concepts and Definition handouts that will guide the paper.
c. Lay out the direction of the paper. - Apply theme/topic (from above) to another activity (e.g., sports, recreation, fitness, physical activity, etc.), another space (e.g., community, high school, college, professional, organization, state, country, etc.) and/or another group (e.g., youth, elderly, sex, gender, race, ethnicity, yourself, etc.).
a. Demonstrate the theme/topic from the materials is a broader issue existing in another context
b. This can be drawn from other sources or can be a personal experience. - Explain a strategy that can be enacted to minimize racism and enhance social justice in the context chosen above. Take the time to think about which actions or policies would be most likely adopted.
This means clearly laying out the what, why and how.
