The Truth About Community in how the pandemic and covid 19 left an effect of loneliness

The Truth About Community in how the pandemic and covid 19 left an effect of loneliness

Step One:

Select a topic related to “The Truth About Community” unit: loneliness, service learning, independence, self-reliance, growth mindset, social support, etc. // I originally was going to write about how the pandemic and covid 19 left an effect of loneliness.

To take a side on a subject, you should first establish the controversial nature of a topic that interests you. Ask yourself the following questions to ensure that you will be able to present a strong argument:

  • Is it a real issue, with genuine controversy and uncertainty?
  • Can you identify at least two distinctive positions?
  • Are you personally interested in advocating one of these positions?
  • Is the scope of the issue narrow enough to be manageable?

Step Two:

Once your topic is selected, you should do some research on the subject matter. While you may already have an opinion on your topic and an idea about which side of the argument you want to take, you need to ensure that your position is well supported. Listing the pro and con sides of the topic will help you examine your ability to support your counterclaims, along with a list of supporting evidence for both sides.

Step Three:

Consider your audience and determine your viewpoint.

Once you have conducted research and taken notes, compare the information side by side. Considering your audience, as well as your own viewpoint, choose the position you will take.

Considering your audience does not mean playing up to the professor. To convince a particular person that your own views are sound, you must consider his or her way of thinking. If you are writing a paper for a sociology professor, obviously your analysis would be different from what it would be if you were writing for an economics, history, or communications professor. You will have to make specific decisions about the terms you should explain, the background information you should supply, and the details you need to convince that reader.

In determining your viewpoint, ask yourself the following:

  • Is your topic interesting? Remember that originality counts. Be aware that I will probably read many essays on the same topic(s), so any paper that is inventive and original will not only stand out but will also be appreciated
  • Can you manage the material within the specifications of the assignment?
  • Does your topic assert something specific, prove it, and where applicable, propose a plan of action?
  • Do you have enough material or proof to support your opinion?

Guidelines:

  • Your paper should follow all MLA guidelines
  • Your paper should be 1500-2000 words (this would be six to eight pages). Your works cited page should not be included in your word or page count.
  • You should include 3-6 outside sources that are scholarly and pass the CRAAP test.
  • For this paper, you are allowed to draw upon your own experiences in service learning or other community related issues to support your argument, but outside research must be used as your primary evidence. In other words, you need research to corroborate and support your own knowledge. Your personal knowledge does not count as one of the required sources. You also do not list yourself on the works cited page!
  • If you want to conduct empirical research such as a survey of your friends/family about your issue, that is allowed to provide relevant statistics. That survey will not count as one of the required scholarly sources.
  • First person voice is allowed IF you are using a personal narrative as evidence. However, statements such as “I think” and “I believe” are still considered signs of immature writing and are not allowed in academic papers such as this one.
  • Your paper must include a refutation paragraph (counterclaim)
  • Proper citations are necessary. Any paper that is found to include plagiarism, either intentional or unintentional, will receive a 0. All the information you need to adhere to MLA standards has been conveyed to you and is posted on Blackboard for your reference. There is no excuse for failure to cite correctly.
