What do you think of the King’s response?
First part
Our first discussion is about the Kuzari, a book written in Arabic over 900 years ago. It’s based on a disputation in the land of the Khazars, near the North-western coast of Caspian Sea. We have records about the disputation from Christian and Muslim sources, about 200 + years before this composition. The author no doubt based some of his
account on historical information but, as he tells us, he is adapting it to make some points.
For this discussion:
Pick ONE of the sections: Philosopher, Christian, Islam, Judaism, and respond to it: what do you think of the argument proposed by the person interviewed by the King? What do you think of the King’s response?
TO the extent you are familiar with the system being proposed, do you think the spokesperson did a good job? Do you recognize the religion or the philosophy?
Do you find the critique compelling? Are there passages you would like to understand better?
Second Part:
Now look at the sections on Islam, Christianity and Islam at the end of the handout, pp. 4 and 5. Each has a liturgical piece–a portion of the regular prayer service that is recited by all or nearly all known denominations within the religious tradition. Some of you may be familiar with one or more of these liturgical pieces; sometimes the
translation given here be different from the version you know. Each section also has a "Credo" type of statement.
