a. Like all essays, this essay must have a thesis. It should state your dominant impression of
yourself as a college student. Write a short sentence that summarizes what kind of student you
think you are. Don’t worry if your thesis doesn’t feel just right – you can always revise later.
For now, just express your opinion. Here are a couple of examples:
I am a model college student.
Although I am in college, I haven’t yet acquired good study habits.
b. Once you have written your sentence, make a list of as many details as you can to support that
general impression. For example, this could be a list made by a student who thought she was a
great college student:
always study assigned homework
schedule study time every day
participate in class
attend class every day
meet with professors regularly
seek tutoring when necessary
participate in several clubs
c. After creating a list, organize your paper to effectively support your purpose. If you choose
emphatic order, start with your lest important example and end with your most important
example. This will help create a more persuasive tone to your essay.

In this essay that emphasizes exemplification, you will write with a specific purpose and for a
specific audience. Your essay should present a strong explanation to your boss about exactly
what you do on a daily basis and why you should be given a raise. Strive to incorporate as any
specific examples of the tasks you perform every day and describe why you are good at them.
For instance, perhaps you work at an animal shelter and clean kennels every day, and you have
streamlined the process to be quicker and less stressful on the animals. Possibly you work as a
UPS package handler and have figured out a better route plan for your territory.
