I’m working on a political science assignment. There are two questions and each question should be answered only according to the book.
Instructions:
Required books to be read for the following assignment (first paper)
Locke, Second Treatise of Government, pp. 30-124 (Chp. VI-XIX).
Levellers, The Putney Debates, pp. 1-24; 31-60.
Start by selecting one of the several discussion questions found in the assignment. At the beginning of the paper briefly explain why you chose that particular question, then proceed to answer that question by:
a) Selecting two passages from the text
b) Explaining and interpreting what you regard as the correct meaning of each passage
c) Considering their implications with regard to the text as a whole
d) Most importantly, explaining in detail why those two passages constitute important evidence to answer the specific question you chose
The paper should be a full, single-spaced page.
First paper
Locke, Second Treatise of Government, pp. 30-124 (Chp. VI-XIX).
1) According to Locke, what are the conditions in which the people have a right to make a revolution? What would you say is the relation between the right to revolution and the other rights of man (life, liberty, and property)?
2) What is the political significance of property – that is, what is the relation between property and government according to Locke?
3) Based on the text, does Locke seem to believe in democracy understood as universal suffrage, one-person one-vote?
Second paper
Levellers, The Putney Debates, pp. 1-24; 31-60.
1) What do you think is the significance of the fact that all the Leveller writings were pamphlets to be distributed widely, and in some cases to be signed by those who agreed? What about the fact that many of these writings were not authored by a single person, but were the product of a collaboration of various, sometimes nameless, people?
2) Does the tone of the different Leveller pamphlets assigned this week change as time moves on (check the date of each pamphlet)? In particular, does the attitude toward the House of Commons change?
3) What is the Levellers’ Agreement of the People? To what extent does it reflect the ideas of Classical Liberalism? To what extent is it a democratic document? Why does it repeatedly refer to the other pamphlet titled “The Case of the Army Truly Stated”?
